Thankfully, said character appears a small part of the ongoing story, as Lemire directs his focus to a killer sporting Bloodshot's more than familiar look. Viewed as somewhat of an external manifestation of Bloodshot's damaged psyche, the cartoon character is easily the book's most divisive instrument. Rather than focus entirely on growth through introspection, Lemire introduces an external outlet in the form of Bloodsquirt. Lemire really takes his time exploring the character's inner workings, and as the debut goes on we begin to see just how deep his emotional scars run.

Taking the name Ray Garrison, Bloodshot's gift of life appears anything but, the former killer wracked by the memories of his past and the guilt which anchors him there. Following a great opening recap (gorgeously illustrated by Suayan) Lemire immediately introduces us to Bloodshot's new normal, serving as the handyman for a perpetually broken inn. What's great about this first issue is how easily Lemire writes him, both for long time fans and new readers alike.

Given that Bloodshot was largely considered The Valiant's breakout character, it's no surprise then that Jeff Lemire knows how to write the big lug.
